Bed and breakfasts create a romantic atmosphere. Situated in historic mansions and delightful cottages, these Michigan accommodations offer a chance to unwind and savor a special retreat. Indulge in homemade breakfasts and enjoy in-room features such as fireplaces and whirlpool tubs that promote leisurely moments.
Wickwood Inn, Saugatuck
Expert design and warm hospitality come first at Wickwood Inn, located in a striking white cottage within walking distance of Saugatuck’s artsy downtown. On my visit to Wickwood Inn, I was welcomed into a light-and-bright living room before being shown to my room. The eleven guest rooms and suites are classy and contemporary with subtle pops of color. The room I stayed in had jewel-toned accents and a gorgeous marble bathroom. Romantic add-ons included in-room massages or a package that includes a bottle of Champagne, chocolate and roses. When the weather is nice, do what I did and have your breakfast in the garden. (I loved the lemon pancakes with vanilla anglaise.) Each evening, we gathered in the library with other guests for social hour, noshing on a charcuterie board and sipping wine.
Pro tip: Book Estate Suite No.5 for luxurious amenities like a self-standing soaking tub and an in-room fireplace. For date night, nab a reservation at Coast 236, a sleek restaurant just a short walk from Wickwood Inn.
Cartier Mansion, Ludington
Housed in a 1905 neoclassical structure, Cartier Mansion has 6 well-designed suites carefully preserved from the home’s past. But don’t equate that with frumpy. Luxe furnishings enhance the modern rooms—think silken wall coverings, crystal chandeliers, claw foot tubs and beautifully tiled walk-in showers. The owners, who have decades of hospitality experience in luxury hotels and boutique properties, also renovated a carriage house into four additional suites. In the Stable Suite, a king bed nestles into a former horse stall and the tack room was converted to a sitting area.
Pro Tip: Cartier Mansion’s motto is “Stay on purpose, make your mark.” With that in mind, they offer guests the opportunity to leave a positive impact on the community by partnering with three local nonprofits to organize volunteer opportunities. Choose to work with a lighthouse restoration group, a local food pantry or Habitat for Humanity.
The Leonard at Logan House, Grand Rapids
When the original owners built their English-style home in 1914, it had one big bragging right: central heat. Because of that, the home only has one fireplace in the parlor, but that doesn’t make it any less cozy. Rooms with original woodwork, heated floors and jetted tubs (some rooms) are ideal to come back to after a day of exploring Grand Rapids. Located in the heart of one of the largest urban historic districts in the country, The Leonard at Logan can arrange walking tours through Heritage Hill. "When my partner and I attended ArtPrize, The Leonard at Logan House was our home base for a weekend exploring the city, " says Brian Kramer, executive editor of Dotdash Meredith Travel. "Downtown is a five-minute drive, and other attractions like the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park are less than 10 minutes away. Both mornings after sitting down to a lavish breakfast in the Leonard's dining room, we walked the Heritage Hill neighborhood. We loved the B&B so much we stayed there the next year, as well!"
Pro Tip: The Leonard is just a couple blocks from Heritage Hill’s Wealthy Street Business District. Do some shopping (hint: Dime & Regal is a great jewelry shop), grab lunch at Donkey Taqueria and finish with a French pastry from Chartreuse Sisters.
Castle in the Country, Allegan
You’ll feel like royalty at this adults-only Victorian mansion—just check out the modern Sir Lancelot suite and its sleek three-sided gas fireplace. In operation since 1992, Castle in the Country has been named one of Michigan’s top romantic getaways and it’s easy to see why. Eight of the 10 suites have in-room fireplaces and two-person jetted tubs. Robes and flameless candles come standard with each room, as does a full gourmet breakfast. Oh, and did we mention there’s an on-site spa?
Pro Tip: Castle in the Country sits on 65 private acres that include a lily pond and a large lake. In winter, you can snowshoe the trails; when the weather warms, snag a complimentary kayak or paddleboat for a day on the lake.
The Historic Webster House, Bay City
If you’re looking for the ultimate relaxing romantic getaway on Michigan’s eastern coast, look no further than The Historic Webster House. Original stonework in suites like The Keep Room make things feel dark and moody, while others have large whirlpool tubs under skylights so you can see the stars while enjoying a bubble bath. The bed and breakfast has an on-site spa, complete with a cedar dry sauna, oversized whirlpool tub, double rain shower and a wine fridge. Guests can pay an additional fee to access the spa during their stay, or book a treatment like a hot stone massage. Two of the six suites also include an in-room sauna.
Pro Tip: Nestled in the crook of the Thumb, Bay City sits on the edge of Saginaw Bay in Lake Huron. The town is home to the popular Tall Ships Celebration, which happens every 3 years.
PrairieSide Suites, Grandville
Just outside of Grand Rapids, PrairieSide Suites prides itself on the fact that all suites have whirlpool tubs, king beds and in-room fireplaces. Breakfast is delivered to the room each morning, so you can enjoy it alone with your partner. Desserts and homemade hot chocolate are available 24/7 in the communal gathering room. PrairieSide has three romance packages you can add on to your booking, which include things like charcuterie, champagne, and desserts. But if you just want a little treat, a la carte options like fresh flowers, candles and truffles are available.
Pro Tip: Though there’s plenty to do in Grand Rapids (just a 10-minute drive), you might not even need to leave PrairieSide. A dipping pool is open seasonally; hammocks, swings and a pergola are scattered throughout the garden; and massages are available for booking in a private room.
